Solid State Hard drives

Solid State Hard drives

Say goodbye to harddrive crashes

Storage is what all counts in a computer. Right from the times of the floppy drives, storage is what that matters in computers. Storage devices are ideally seen to be portable and hard drives have never been called as portable devices unlike flash drives and CD-Rs as they are always inside the computer. Solid state drives are data storage devices that use solid state memory to store persistent data. But as this Solid state hard drives has no moving parts they are less fragile than the hard disks.

Solid state drives are silent and enjoy low access time and latency. As compared to the hard disks the Solid state drives are more advantageous and have more edge over the hard disks. They start up faster than the hard drives as no spin up is required. Moreover the solid state drives have fast random access since there is no read/ write head. The SSDs consume low power and hence are energy efficient. While writing or erasing the data off the SSDs, there is no risk as there is lesser chance of irrecoverable data spoilage.

While there are many advantages of SSDs over hard disks, the demerits cannot be overlooked. SSDs are more expensive than the hard disks. As per the per gigabyte price, SSDs cost you up to $4 per gigabyte, hard disks are available for less than half a dollar per gigabyte. Currently, the storage capacity of Solid state hard drives is lesser than the hard disks, but it is estimated that there will be SSDs having 1TB of space in the future. Even though stated prior that SSDs consume lesser power than the hard disks, the D-RAM SSDs consume power even when the computer is off.

Even though there are disadvantages, the advantages cannot be overlooked. The Solid state hard drives are a revolution in the computer field and there is no way that they can be stopped from bring the ultimate storage device in the future.
